Board of County Commissioners to vote on new district map Tuesday

The Arapahoe County Board of Commissioners could conclude the County’s Redistricting process on Tuesday, July 25, by voting to adopt a draft map of new commissioner district boundaries.

The draft was submitted by the Citizens Redistricting Advisory Committee, a working group of nine County residents tasked with drafting new boundaries.

The Committee held public meetings between January and May this year to create at least three new maps for Commissioners to consider. The Committee also conducted a “listening tour” in April, during which they presented the four drafts to residents in each of the County’s five districts and absorbed public feedback.

State statute requires that new districts contain equal populations, preserve “communities of interest” (groups that benefit from remaining within a single district), and do not give a political advantage to any entity, party or candidate.

The Committee considered a total of 19 draft maps and evaluated how they compared to statutory criteria before selecting four maps to submit to the BOCC in June.

The proposed map differs from the County’s current district map in a few notable ways:

  • The City of Glendale would move from District 5 to District 4;
  • Roadways would be the primary dividing lines between Districts 2 and 3, and between Districts 4 and 5; and
  • Communities along the I-25 corridor and around Cherry Creek Reservoir are contained within single districts.

The BOCC first presented the draft to the public at its July 11 business meeting. Residents are invited to attend Tuesday’s meeting and offer comments on the proposed final map.
