Plan ahead if you need a passport

Many travelers are looking forward to vacations abroad this time of year. If you’re one of them, you’ll want to be sure to check your passport status before you book your flight.

The Recording division has been experiencing overwhelming demand for new passport appointments and availability is extremely limited. The good news is, many U.S. Postal Service offices offer passport services, and appointments are usually available much sooner. You can visit www.usps.com/scheduler?to search for appointments near you, or expand your search area a few miles to find appointments even sooner.

Consider these important reminders to make sure you’re prepared to travel:

  • Processing times through the U.S. Department of State are routinely between 10-13 weeks, so check your passport status even if you’re planning a trip several months ahead of time.
  • Expedited passport services (7–9 weeks) are available for a $60 fee.
  • The State Department has paused its online passport renewal program, but you may still be eligible to renew by mail
  • Children’s passports expire every five years. Both parents must accompany minors under the age of 16 to apply. We know kids grow up too fast, make sure their passport is up to date!
  • The Clerk and Recorder’s Office only processes new passport applications, not renewals.
