Vaccination check: mpox

While it’s not making headlines anymore, mpox (formerly called monkeypox) could have a resurgence with the warmer weather.

Mpox can be transmitted when someone who has mpox has close contact with someone else. Close contact can mean physical contact with the sores, bumps, or lesions of someone who has mpox, or through prolonged, face-to-face interactions with someone who has it. Brief interactions without physical contact are unlikely to result in getting the virus.

People are encouraged talk with their partner about any mpox symptoms and be aware of any new or unexplained rash or lesion on either of their bodies. Arapahoe County Public Health offers vaccinations for mpox. Consider a vaccination if you or a sexual partner:

  • Had close physical contact with someone who has mpox in the last 14 days.
  • Have multiple or anonymous sexual partners.
  • Have close physical contact with other people in a venue where anonymous or group sex may occur.
  • Were diagnosed with gonorrhea or syphilis in the past six months.
  • Are living with HIV.
  • Are immunocompromised and anticipate potential mpox exposure.
  • Use or are eligible for HIV PrEP.
  • Have sex in exchange for money, shelter, food, and other goods or needs.
  • Anticipate experiencing any of the above scenarios.
